'She Dreams of Books and Pencils' is a 15x30 art piece. The mediums used were acrylic paint, ink, painted papers, gel medium, gesso and crackle paste. I was layering my painted paper pieces and flipped the canvas so that the longest side was at the vertical and a "school house" appeared. I worked on the art piece with more layers of paint and gesso and 2 figures appeared. One figure was outside of the "school house" while the second figure stayed inside. I recently watched a documentary called 'Girl Rising' and a good friend of mine is part of a charity organization building schools in under-developed countries. It's all coming together. I was inspired to write the following:
Change is Coming To all my fellow girls, you will be educated, you will overcome, you will rise above, you are the light in the darkness, the solution to the mystery. Education will take you out of poverty, these are just not words. Read books, keep reading, books break the shackles of the mind. Imagination sets the mind free. Imagination helps you fly over 'fear'. Your fears, your parent's fears, society's fears - we look down at 'fear' as it struggles to take root. 'Fear' can't get rooted - it's not wanted. Our minds expand, expand to 'what ifs, why nots, who said, shall we try it anyway'; just jump, jump into the doors of opportunity, of freedom, of courage, jump for future's sake. Remember, you are not your circumstance, you are not your situation, you are life, you are hope; the best is yet to come. Change is coming, and when the dust settles, you will open your eyes to stacks of books, sharpened pencils, notebooks, kind and passionate teachers, rows upon rows of desks, and you will come home to clean water, a healthy meal and freedom to just be - a girl.
